Lucy, a wealthy Roman girl, dedicated her virgninity to Christ, and refused to marry a pagan,  He turned her in for the crime of being Christian, and she was martyred under the emperor Diocletian.  She was blinded before she was killed, and her name comes from the word 'lux' which means light, which is why Sue has portrayed her like a candle of God in this dark world.
